IS flag, Djarot asks Jakartans to be more vigilant

JAKARTA. Jakarta Governor Djarot Saiful Hidayat has said that an Islamic State (IS) flag left by an unknown individual at the Kebayoran Lama Police headquarters in South Jakarta should be considered as a serious threat by the force.

“This is a warning to the police and citizens to be more vigilant,” Djarot said in Jakarta on Tuesday.

Djarot, however, said he entrusted the safety of the city to the police: “I think the police will be able to overcome it.”

A motorcyclist who stopped briefly in front of the Kebayoran Lama Police headquarters reportedly placed a 100-centimeter by 50-cm flag on its surrounding fence early on Tuesday. The police also found a letter that threatened to turn Jakarta into a war zone like Marawi in the Philippines, which has been under siege by the military trying to root out an IS-linked terrorist group.

The situation at the police headquarters has returned to normal, kompas.com reported.

“The service should run normally and the incident should not hamper our activities,” Kebayoran Lama Police chief Comr. Ardi Rahananto said.

The police are currently investigating the incident by checking CCTV camera footage and searching for witnesses to question around the headquarters.
