Govt to revoke PSSI suspension

JAKARTA. President Joko "Jokowi" Widodo has instructed Youth and Sports Minister Imam Nahrawi to prepare the revocation of the Soccer Association of Indonesia (PSSI) suspension that has been imposed since April last year.

Jokowi's decision was announced after a meeting with the minister, Vice President Jusuf Kalla and the Ad Hoc Committee on PSSI Reformation chair Agum Gumelar at the Presidential Palace on Wednesday.

The government suspended the management of PSSI, following a lengthy internal dispute. The absence of the PSSI led to FIFA’s decision to ban Indonesia from entering any international soccer competition.

"Good news, PSSI will be reactivated," said Agum after the meeting, adding he would soon report the good news to FIFA headquarters.

He explained that the committee would continue the ongoing reform process within PSSI and would organize an extraordinary congress to set up new PSSI management.

"It is possible (that a congress will be held), but it has to be appropriate, in line with FIFA regulation," he added.

The ad hoc committee, Agum continued, would work hand in hand with the ministry to reform and monitor the organization. (Ayomi Amindoni)
